Hi Richard,

I agree with you. Staring a business is always a risk in good time as well as in bad time.
We taken a risk and started our business in bad time i.e. in this recession period. In this period we stressed more on our skills and clients from our network. We got a good success and now decided to go outside teh network we have.
So as a newcomer, I just would like to know is there any specific time frame only when the business development can happen in different countries? What is good time to be in US for business development?

Your inputs will help us to decide the direction.

Thanks and Regards,
Mahesh

Happy New Year Richard!

You know and many others too, that I love my job. I think I've got the best job in the world even - doing those things I love doing best (working to and with my 'talents').
And it is posts like these that sometimes make me feel guilty. Not guilty that I spend many hours 'working' (who said doing things you like best is work?), but that I tremendously enjoy all those hours.

But then of course, our business is a two-man/woman-band, we don't have children to care for or any other family obligations. Might be a big difference. And I must confess the week 'away' we had lately was only partly filled with work related visits/meetings, the remaining days and hours we spent at our leisure. It does recharge the mind!
And I must also confess I'm looking forward to Spring when - after work - I can take one of those (according to friend Kent) daily 'garden-holidays'.

So, yes, hopefully this year will bring us plenty of warm and sunny evenings so I can fill in garden-holidays on a daily base in the dairy ;-)

Hi Richard,

I agree with your points. Its at times like these that you need to raise your profile not hide it away. Also the 'keeping your head down' attitude impacts on your staff because they then begin to play safe rather than do innovative things that they might normally do and in times like these you need innovators. None of us can say if we will survive the recession in one peice
but we need to play 'all out' and meet the challenge head on.

I actually bought my Mum an Archers calender for Christmas!

Yes keeping a cool logical head is vital to making good business decisions.
Passion is important but can get in the way of common sense sometimes.
I never make a desicion in the heat of the moment as it never used to work for me so i stopped doing it!

Hi Richard
Like your blog, and this article in particular resonated with me.
I find it kind of scary the number of people who are running scared, even on a personal/domestic level, and it all has an effect on the economy.

My business (promotional gifts) is finding a large number of business are holding off, but an even GREATER number are coiming out of the woodwork to place new business with us. Swings and roundabouts eh?

Hi Richard

I heard about "the Archers" but must say never really heard it. Think I' m missing out on something, or so I'm frequently told.

As you know, I'm passionate about our business and all matters that concerns it. Passionate to set it up good, proper and authentic so it has its own personality. You can't separate personal emotion from any 'task' you enjoy and I enjoy my work tremendously: making sure our business succeeds - long term.

But - and I can't speak from personal experience on the following, but I do have family and friends who relate stories about it - taking care of your business is like taking care of a child, making sure 'it' has everything it needs to succeed in life. But at one point you will have to let 'it' go. You can take pride in everything 'it' achieves, because you helped 'it' on its way as best as possible and with all means at your disposal, but you have to remember always that decisions should be based on what is best for the 'child' /business.

Well, back to work now - minding the shop so it doesn't throw a tantrum ;-)

Too true Karin - I loved the positive side especially - why waste precious time trying to cover up when being honest and open, is not only so much easier but, leaves you personally with a 'peace state of mind'.

Hi Richard

Nice article you directed us to, especially the last list of positive results using social media sites made me smile.
There is in fact no difference in 'buying' someone (hiring a new employee or a service) or buying a product when using the Internet as a tool to search for the best around.

Being authentic is not only honest and trust building, it's much easier to do too - how much energy and time must you waste when trying to remember what you wrote where and when online ?
Nowadays you are your 'Google's results'.
